Bone Graft

Bone Graft

A surgical procedure in which bone or a bone-like material is transplanted or placed in a specific area to promote bone growth or regenerate lost bone.

The graft material may be taken from the patient’s own body (autograft), sourced from a donor (allograft), or be synthetic (alloplast). In dentistry, bone grafts are often performed to augment the jawbone, providing additional support for dental implants or addressing bone deficiencies resulting from tooth loss or trauma.

The goal of a bone graft is to create a stable and healthy foundation for improved function and aesthetics.

The Procedure Of Bone Graft

  • 1

Begin with a thorough assessment, including imaging, to evaluate the extent of bone loss and determine the need for a bone graft.

  • 2

Prepare the patient for the procedure, ensuring they are comfortable and informed about the process.

  • 3

Place the selected graft material, which may be autograft (patient’s own bone), allograft (donor bone), or alloplast (synthetic material), into the targeted area

  • 4

Secure the graft material in place with sutures to facilitate proper healing.

  • 5

Provide postoperative care instructions, including any prescribed medications and follow-up appointments.

  • 6

Monitor the patient’s healing progress, as the graft material integrates with the existing bone over time.

  • 7

Schedule follow-up appointments to assess the success of the bone graft and plan for any additional procedures, such as dental implant placement.
